"The star on that world was much closer to the planet than the sun was to earth, as it was nearing the end of it's lifespan. The swelling star burned off much of the planet's atmosphere leaving just barely enough protection for the explorers to venture out of their protective ship. They couldn't walk long without their suits however, as the solar radiation would burn they as it had the entire landscape."
